What is fair trade?

Fair trade is a commitment to social justice in which employees and farmers are treated and paid fairly, sustainable environmental practices are followed and long-term trade relationships are fostered.  Georgette’s is committed to practicing fair trade principles in all aspects of our business—from the employees we hire to the farmers and artisans we support by marketing their products.

Is your coffee fair trade certified?
Yes!  Georgette’s only sells fairly traded coffees online.  All of our coffees are Fair Trade Certified by Transfair USA and carry the certification label, the international mark of fairly-traded agricultural products.

Is your coffee organic?
Y
es!  All of the coffees we sell online are shade grown and 100% organic.

How fresh is your coffee?
We pride ourselves on selling all our coffees at the peak of freshness and flavor.  All of our beans are fresh roasted locally in a micro roasting process designed to ensure the best flavor from each bean.  Our customers know that the coffee they are drinking has been roasted days, not weeks or months, before they drink it.

What is your roasting schedule?
We micro-roast our coffee each weekday at our Maumee, Ohio store.

What types of coffees do you offer?
We offer coffee from all four growing regions of the world:  Africa, Asia, Central America and South America.  Georgette’s only sells the finest quality Arabica beans that are 100% shade grown and organic.  We do not sell the inferior Robusto beans that you find in grocery store coffees.  Coffees are sold by the bag as single origin beans and blends.

Are all your gifts fair trade?
All the products offered on our web site and nearly all the products in our retail store come from fair trade organizations, most of whom are members of the Fair Trade Federation.  At Georgette’s, we are striving to be as close to 100% fair trade as we can.

Who are your trading partners?
Our largest trading partners are Ten Thousand Villages, Equal Exchange, Global Gift, Cooperative Coffees, Putumayo World Music, Numi Tea and Baskets by Sunshine.

Who owns Georgette’s?
Georgette’s is owned and operated by Sunshine Inc. of Northwest Ohio, a non-profit agency serving people with disabilities and their families.  Georgette’s operates as part of Sunshine’s supported employment department and provides job opportunities to many individuals with developmental disabilities who work in our retail store and internet operation.  All net profits from Georgette’s business operations are returned to Sunshine to provide services to
people with disabilities.

Why are Georgette’s employees special?
Georgette’s employs people with disabilities to work as food servers, food preparation assistants, coffee roasters, retail clerks, shipping clerks and production workers in our retail and internet operations.  Our employees with disabilities work in partnership with  job coaches, supervisors and managers to improve their skills and level of independence.  They also earn an all-important paycheck (everyone’s favorite part of the job!).
