Who’s Georgette?

Georgette Engler was a mother, a visionary, a pioneer, a caregiver and one strong-willed woman.  She and husband Roy raised five children with disabilities right here in Maumee and then founded Sunshine Children’s Home to help other families care for their children with disabilities.  Georgette wanted to “bring a little bit of sunshine” into the lives of these children by providing loving care in a clean, home-like setting.  Nearly 60 years later, she would be pleasantly surprised to see how much Sunshine has grown.

Today, Sunshine is the largest provider of residential and related services to people with disabilities and their families in Northwest Ohio.  Besides the Children’s Home, Sunshine cares for people living in 16 family care (group) homes, provides supported living services to 110 clients living in their own homes and offers a variety of family support programs.

Sunshine’s supported employment program is the newest area of growth.  Sunshine saw that people with disabilities needed more opportunities for meaningful work.  That observation blossomed into an idea for a coffee and gift shop.  In a nod to our past, we decided to name this new endeavor Georgette’s Grounds & Gifts in honor of our founder, Mrs. Georgette Engler.  We hope our fresh food, coffees and gifts will “bring a little sunshine” into the lives of you, our customers.
